There will be another 1,000 yard rifle match in Cuyama Sunday, June 20th. Cuyama is located between Santa Maria and Bakersfield on Hwy 166 in central California.
New shooters and observers are more than welcome. If you'd like to try shooting to 1,000 yards and learn how to pull and mark targets, come on out. Signups are start at 7:00 AM Sunday and shooting starts about 8:00 AM. The Match Fee is only $8.
The match consists of 20 rounds at 1,000 yards twice, with unlimited sighter shots on your first relay and two sighter shots on your second relay. Three (3) boxes of ammo should be plenty, (if you can shoot on paper at 1,000 yards).
What you will need: 1.) Any good 308 or similar rifle (you can go bigger if you like) with good 155 or 175 grain loads will work. If you have a fast twist barrel on a smaller caliber rifle with appropriate (heavy bullet) loads, that will work also. 2.) A higher power scope with click finger adjustments will be needed (9X but the higher the better) Although some guys shoot with open sights, I just can't see that far. 3.) A bipod and/or a front rest and rear bag and a shooting mat, scrap carpet, old blanket, tarp, beach towel to put on the ground, etc. (If you don't have some of this equipment, I can loan you some for the match.) 4.) Safety glasses, ear protection, chamber flag, pen, etc (I have extra chamber flags also). You will also need to have a good 100, 200, 400 or 600 yard zero so that we can get you on paper at 1,000 yards.
If we get a couple of new shooters on the line, I will be glad to coach you through sighting in, shooting the match, working the targets, etc. If any of you are coming from Bakersfield, you can even ride out with me (I leave my house about 6 AM)
If you'd like to observe the match I would recommend bringing a chair, a pair of good binoculars and/or a spotting scope on a tripod so that you can see the target markers for scores.
There will be a practice session starting at 10 AM Saturday and you can camp out there overnight if you like.. There is an outhouse and cooking grills and firewood there but you need to bring everything else to camp with. A tent is recommended as there are rattlesnakes in the area.
