My first lathe work was done with a 1/2" black and decker power drill and a file.

want a trick?
get an x-y table.
Mount a vise to it
put a real lathe tool in the vise
you can do amazing lathe work in a drill press when you need to...

Have an X-Y table but its crappy. Need to get a nice one but too cheap
