CaPRC 1/9/11 Match AAR
We had 25 shooters show up to shoot today's match out of 27 RSVP's.
James & Ryan ran the match.
Joe V, Jose F and Nathan helped run the line.
This was our first match with 3 squads of shooters.
I am happy to report that we finished an hour ahead of our expected schedule.
What this means is that if everyone keeps the matches moving in the future like we did today, that it should be no problem to go to 36 shooters and still get done around 1pm.
Total round count for the day was 50 if you shot all 5 shots on the KYL.
There were 9 stages with 1000 total points possible.
The course of fire was as follows:
Stage 1
100yd cold bore
Round count: 1
On the beep, engage the 1" dot at 100yds with 1 shot.
50 points for a hit.
50 points possible
60 seconds prep, 30 seconds shoot time.
Stage 2
200yd hostage
Round count: 6
On the beep, engage the hostage target at 200 yards from the prone position with three rounds on each side.
20 points for shots within the scoring box or 10 points for any other bad guy hit and -20 points for any hostage hit.
120 points possible
60 sec prep and 60 sec shoot.
Stage 3
100yd weak side dots
Round count: 5
On the beep, engage the five 1" dots at 100yds with 1 shot each from the weak side.
20 points per hit.
100 points possible.
60 seconds prep, 60 seconds shoot time.
Stage 4
In-N-Out
Round count: 7
On the signal, engage the targets in the specified order:
100yrd 2in dot with 1 shot
300yrd 6in steel with 2 shots
100yrd 2in dot with 1 shot
400yrd steel 6" steel with 2 shots
100yrd 2in dot with 1 shot
20 points per hit
140 points possible
60 seconds prep, 60 seconds shoot time.
Stage 5
300yrd hostage transition.
Round count: 6
This stage is fired in 3 separate passes.
On the first pass start signal, engage the two large hostage flappers with one round each in 6 seconds.
First pass hits are worth 15 points per hit or -15 for a hostage hit
On the second pass start signal, engage the two large hostage flappers with one round each in 5 seconds.
Second pass hits are worth 20 points per hit or -20 for a hostage hit
On the third pass start signal, engage the two large hostage flappers with one round each in 4 seconds.
Third pass hits are worth 25 points per hit or -25 for a hostage hit
120 points possible.
60 seconds prep, 15 seconds total shoot time over 3 separate passes.
Stage 6
Kneeling to seated transitions
Round count: 6

Transition to the sitting position and engage the 300yrd IPSC with 3 rounds.
20 points per hit
120 points possible
60 seconds prep, 70 seconds shoot time.
Stage 7
100yd Pool balls
Round count: up to 9
On the beep, engage all the solid pool balls. The 8 ball is optional. A hit to the 8 ball without also hitting all other solid balls causes the shooter to lose all points.

100 points possible.
60 seconds prep, 70 second shoot time.
Stage 8
100yd Standard KYL.
Round count: up to 5

Stage 9

Re: CaPRC 1/9/11 Match AAR
For all those that attended, this is old news, but we ran 3 squads of shooters today as an experiment to see how long it would take.
I am happy to report that we finished an hour ahead of our expected schedule.
If everyone keeps the matches moving in the future like we did today, it should be no problem to go to 36 shooters and still get done around 1pm.

I can't believe how well Randall did with a .223 and a POS 12x scope. Really shows it's the shooter and not the gear. Way to go Randall!

I'm getting spoiled by not having to think about what magnification the scope is on.
I think I shot the in-n-out at about 8x and I did it all hold-over from my 100yd zero.

When I shove my thumb into the thumbhole, it's very uncomfortable.
So when I wrap my thumb up top of the stock and straddle the pistol grip with my lower fingers, that gets my trigger finger comfortable.
I can't wait for my T4A to come in so I can get rid of the AI stock.
I might actually set my 223 barreled actionback into an HS stock and inlet it for the extra R&D bottom metal I have sitting here waiting for the T4A...

oops didn't mean to demean the little guy... I guess in this day of people spending $2-3k on glass it's fun to see a less expensive option keep up with the rest. ; )AR15barrels wrote:

If the 6-24 turns out to be as nice as this 3-12, it would be THE sub $1000 scope of choice for out to about 800yds.MichaelV wrote:I guess in this day of people spending $2-3k on glass it's fun to see a less expensive option keep up with the rest. ; )

Good to know that there is a decent, less expensive option as far as scopes go.AR15barrels wrote:

Muscle memory...
Sonny just went to a left handed gun.
Watch the first 6 seconds where he tries to run the bolt with his right hand...

Thank you to the organizers and crew for another great match. This match ran like buttah.
Congratulations to the top guns and special congratulations to Mike for the W.
Randall's conscious sees: Remington 700, AICS, USO, etc.
Randall's subconscious sees:

Also, is it mere coincidence that Mike won the match with his new GMT? Perhaps. Perhaps not.

Re: CaPRC 1/9/11 Match AAR
I'm digging this one of Keith:
Some may look at that clip and think it's a disaster. Keith doesn't chamber his first round. He has a hard time finding the 300-yard disc. He doesn't know when he closed his bolt over an empty magazine. Blah blah blah.
I don't see it that way. Keith accomplished there what I try to do but most times cannot do: he kept his cool. You can see that Keith had a hard time finding the 300-yard disc with his scope at max magnification. But he didn't panic. He didn't rush the shots after he finally found the disc because he wanted to get off all the shots before James called "time". There were no future shots in Keith's mind. The only shot that mattered was the one he was taking at that time. Previous shots didn't matter and neither did future ones. Keith just bangs one shot after another and they're all hits. He connected with every shot he discharged.
So Keith ran out of time and didn't get to bang the seventh shot. Who cares? Keith scored 120 points on that stage, even with those bobbles. He kept his cool. Like Fonzie.
In contrast, I got off all seven shots well within time. No bobbles or anything. I just shot at one target and moved to the next and then the next and so on. I scored 60 points on that stage.

Re: CaPRC 1/9/11 Match AAR
All of the pics from today's match should be up tomorrow. Here are a few teasers.
Ho some pics of the interesting footwork:

I think James' rifle is back in action:

Watch out for James at the next match.
Randall's beater rings and ultra-fast bolt work:

And you thought the .308 was hispeed low drag?:

Think again.
Ken's hostage-takers:

Well done.

Re: CaPRC 1/9/11 Match AAR
This one I feel bad about.
Shoot-off between Brian and me:

We were shooting at the KYL target at 100 yards. If I recall, par time was 30 seconds or thereabouts to make the target extra difficult.
Everyone, including me, thought Brian won. So he got the Top 308 tag:

Then Ken looked through a spotter and saw that Brian didn't win after all. The two of us had tied with two hits apiece.
So we had another shoot-off, this time at the large red plate at 400 yards from sitting:

Brian and I both missed our first shots. Then Brian missed his second shot while I clipped the target with my second shot. So I ended up with the tag:

I'm really stoked I got it, but I feel bad about it too because of the misunderstanding on the KYLs. I feel a little as though I snagged the tag from Brian's neck.
Brian, it was really fun shooting against you today. I was totally spent after our shoot-off.

First post here, checking in with the board members. Quick intro, my name is Han Chung. I have an AI AWP w/ a S&B 3-12x50 PI. Hoping to join a match in the near future.
Cheers!

I think the base is TPS.para38super wrote: I know your scope is Bushnell 4200, but what are those rings and base your are using?
The rings are the lowest 30mm rings I could find in my scrap heap of scope rings.
I changed the rings out to TPS steel super lows after the match.

I have seen many companies that sell the exact same ones and they are almost always right around $10.
