CaPRC 2/13/11 Match AAR

We had 25 shooters show up to shoot today's match out of 27 RSVP's.
James & Connor ran the match.
Brian01tj, Robert Hode and HoChung helped run the line.
Total round count for the day was 50 if you shot all 6 shots on the KYL.
There were 10 stages with 1000 total points possible.

The course of fire was as follows:

Stage 1
500yd coldbore
Round count: 1
On the beep, engage the RED circle at 500yds with 1 shot. No rear support may be used other than your bare hand. Start position is standing behind the rifle, loaded magazine in rifle.
50 points possible
60 seconds prep, 15 seconds shoot time.

Stage 2
200yd KYL.
Round count: up to 6
On the beep, engage the circles from largest to smallest, stopping if you do not believe you can make a sure hit. A miss causes shooter to zero the whole target.
Scoring per the values on the target.
105 points possible.
60 seconds prep, 70 second shoot time.

Stage 3
100yd 5 dot option from behind the yellow line
Round count: 5
Start with ammo on the back benches & a round in hand, on the beep, move to rifle, engage a dot, open bolt, retrieve another round and engage another dot, repeat until finished.
Points awarded per the target: 20pts for ea 3/8" dot, 10pts for ea 5/8" dot, and 5pts for ea 1" dot.
100 points possible.
60 seconds prep, 80 second shoot time.

Stage 4
Holdovers, back and forth.
Round count: 7
On the beep, engage the green plates in the following order: 150 little man, 300 circle, 150 little man, 400 circle, 150 little man, 300 circle, 150 little man. Shooter may not turn elevation knob during the string of fire.
20 points per hit.
140 points possible.
60 seconds prep, 60 seconds shoot time.

Stage 5
300yd unsupported prone
Round count: 5
On the beep engage the orange 10" round plate with 5 rounds from the unsupported prone position. Only the shooters elbows may touch the ground.
20 points per hit.
100 points possible.
60 sec prep and 60 sec shoot time.

Stage 6
200yd Little Man Vs. Man
Round count: 6
On the beep, engage the 4 swinging men from outside to inside and then your 300yd 6" flapper. Each target must be activated in order to advance to the next target.
Points awarded as follows: 20pts for each little man hit and 30pts to the first shooter to hit their 6" popper.
110 points possible for winner and 80 points possible for the loser.
60 seconds prep, 40 second shoot time.
(in the case of a close call on the 6" poppers it will be up to the range officer and spotters to determine the winner)

Stage 7
100yd Pool balls weak side
Round count: 8
On the beep, engage all the solid pool balls from your weak-side shoulder. The 8 ball is optional. A hit to the 8 ball without also hitting all other solid balls causes the shooter to lose all points.
10 points per ball except the 8 ball is worth 30 or zero points if all solids are not hit.
100 points possible.
60 seconds prep, 80 second shoot time.

Stage 8
100yd positional
Round count: 6
On the beep, engage the 100yd mini IPSC target center of mass with 2 shots from standing, 2 shots kneeling, and 2 shots sitting.
Scoring as per the point values on the target.
150 points possible.
60 seconds prep, 70 seconds shoot time.

100 yard spelling bee
Round count: 5
On the beep, spell out the assigned 5 letter word by shooting the letters on the target.
20 points per letter spelling the word.
100 points possible
30 seconds prep, 60 seconds shoot time.

Stage 10
150yd Side prone little man
Round count: 1
On the beep engage the little man with 1 round from the port-up side prone position.
45pts for a hit
Shooter will begin prepping at the time the person in front of them shoot time starts. 10 second prep time from the time the shooter before them is finished.
30 seconds shoot time

Side prone is a very useful tool in the toolbox all precision shooters must employ to be the very best shooter they can be. Anything that can make us better shooters is welcome in my book.

Thanks again for another great match guys! Special thanks to James, Connor, Brian01tj, Robert Hode and HoChung for running it. Next month I expect to see that little man rack at 300 instead of 200 and the flapper at 4 instead of 3...

Also lets write the shooter numbers a little bigger next time! John I'm coming for you buddy :lol:

Thanks for coming out today guys. I'm pretty sure some things today presented a new challenge for most of you and i think some were surprised you did as well as you did.

Why should we make the targets smaller or the COF easier? How is that benefiting us as competitive shooters? Step it up guys....you can do it and most of you did!! Good job!! You guys have to remember that if we make the targets bigger that just gives you the feeling that your doing better because you score is higher. We are all shooting and missing at those same small targets though so it's all equal...the best shooter still wins. When we are all shooting small targets it forces you to be more precise. Get good at it and then when we go shoot other clubs matches we're gonna beat the living shit out of them on their 5moa targets

as for side prone... get good at it and add it to you box of tricks when you go places that shoot it. It's here to stay boys!! The reason most of you suck at it is because you've never been forced to shoot it before. That's like benchrest guys that suck at shooting off hand.

Really fun match, guys. Thank you to the organizers and helpers for a great day.

James, great course of fire. The mix of steel and paper was really fun. I loved the 300-yard slung prone and the man vs. man stages most of all.

And I even liked the keyboard and side prone stages even though I ate shit on both stages. I think every match should include at least one "wildcard" stage. By "wildcard", I mean a stage or target that we haven't had before. It's good to mix it up and try new things. It prevents the matches from becoming repetitive or "gamed". If a wildcard stage proves especially successful, perhaps it will work its way into the rotation of "standards". If not, at a minimum it was well worth a try. At least that's the way I see it. Last month's peekaboo stage with the cardboard was a great wildcard.

Today was my first match where I didn't fuck up. By "fuck up", I don't mean miss a target. I consider misses inevitable. Rather, I mean that today was my first match where I didn't shoot a stage with the wrong dope, shoot someone else's target, misread the written course of fire and do something wrong, and so on. So I'm making progress.

I did all of those things! Despite my lousy score it was really a blast. Very different from shooting from prone at a concentric target with no time pressure or other variables. I have a lot to work on and it is an exciting challenge and cannot wait for the next match.

But after your match, even if you didn't win, you feel like this:

You witnessed my biggest F up of the day. I didn't read the COF carefully enough and didn't know what to do with my last two rounds on stage 4! I had to pull out the COF and read it on the fly. That sucked. Stupid rookie mistake. I also zeroed the KYL by putting two rounds on the biggest target because the COF didn't say anything about one round per dot. Another stupid mistake. You live and learn. At least I didn't shoot any stages with the wrong DOPE dialed. Learned that from last time.

Did you have any shots out side of the circles? The COF did not say only one round per circle, it only said engauge them, largest to smallest with up to 6 rounds. As I read it, if you put two rounds in the biggest circle, 2 in the next, and 3 in the 3rd circle...you should get the points of the three circles. Judges?

Nah, I asked James about it after the fact and got the bad news. It's cool. I used the second shot in the big circle to confirm my zero. It was messing with my head not being confident about my zero and my DOPE at 200 yards.

"Everything you need to know is on the COF" is what I have been told by more than one of the founding members. The KYL stage did not specify how many rounds each circle could be engaged with. There are first time shooters every month, so everydoby does not know how to play KYL. If each circle can only have one hole in it, it would be simple to add ...engage each target with one round from largest to smallest... to the COF description. I'm just trying to avoid vagueness here.

Just wanna thank you guys for a great day. It was nice to finally get to meet a few of you in person. Thanks to everyone for some helpful advice, These matches are real eye opener, I learned an incredible amount about what I need to work on.

In my opinion you're reading to far into it. It may be an over sight by Randall not including that in to it but i don't think he needs to. Really... we ALL know how to play KYL. You can shoot all your shots in the biggest DOT and argue we didn't say you couldn't but everyone is just gonna kick you in the nuts. KYL is KYL man. It's not 5 dot option.
