I am planning at the least to show up and check out the competition. Im picking up my rifle on the 9th and may be able to get it sighted in before or on the 18th. What should I have ready if I do decide to participate? I am basically new to scoped shooting and don't have a lot of the basic equipment as of yet. Any advice on what I have to have and what I should have?

I do have/ have the following en route.
Savage 10 Predator Hunter in 6.5 creedmoor
Enough ammo for the match
Base and rings
Vortex Viper 6.5x20x44 mildot scope(went with a cheaper scope to make sure I really enjoy this form of shooting before spending big)

What I assume I need
A bipod(thinking the Harris swivel 9-13" )
A shooting mat for prone- I am open to suggestions-looking cheap
I haven't shouldered my rifle with the scope just yet but I am thinking a cheek pad
A rear sandbag- suggestions?
Do I need a sling?

Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Get the Harris 6-9 BRM-S. If you need to borrow a rear bag I have a few. Sling is not needed but will help down the road. Bring what you have and the rest of us will help out with what you dont.

You want to be as low as possible. Most people use the 6-9. If you have a spare tire... you might need the next size up... but even the ones with a tire, *try* to use the 6-9.

As others said.... Bring everything you have. The rest of us will help help you out.

Nathan (short action precision) sells a lot of gear including rear bags, or you can make your own basic bag with a long tube sock. Put in near 2 cups of rice in the toe, twist it, bring the ankle/calf part back down over the foot. Thats what I use still. Though one of these days, I'll probably buy one of Nathans fancy pants bags.

Have you shot through a chrono and know the speed of your rounds for a chart?

You dont need a mat your first time. Usually, the first people to shoot throw down their mats and leave them for the other strings to use.

Looking for a cheap mat, the midway basic mat is decent and fairly cheap. They go on sale all the time too.

Just go, and shoot it. There is no faster way to learn. While you're not shooting, watch, ask questions- why- how- etc.

These matches are informal- We all BS and joke around with each other. It's not a "serious" thing. Come out. Have fun. Learn. ask questions, fondle peoples gear.

I haven't shot the rifle yet, I have just been assuming the MV will be around the same as what Hornady has published(I have the same length barrel that they used for their published numbers) and placed the info in to strelok+, we'll see how close it is. I pick the rifle up on the 9th but may not get a chance to shoot it until the 18th.

Never Assume.......

However this is a short range match, so DOPE will not be a factor.

I am going to try and make it out. I also wanted to sign up for the membership this year. I went to one of the informal training thing last year in oct. Would love to make some matches this year with you guys. I too am new to comps, have a nice rifle I just had build. Just need to bribe the grandparents to watch the little ones. Really hoping I can make it out there.

Just tell the grand parents, if they dont watch the kids, you're taking them to a scary rifle match with crude people with no morals, and the noise... dont forget the noise.... Do you REALLY want your grandchildren exposed to such loud noises at a young age?

Work em dude....

You might be able to sign up for CAPRC membership if thats what you're talking about.. The WEGC match is not actually a CAPRC event though. Unless you were talking about signing up as a club member of WEGC... which... there is a waiting list.

Just wanted to point that out.

Question for the bigger guys running the 6-9" bipods. Are you using them on nice adjustable replacement stocks or factory stocks? I got the bipod today and granted I don't have the rifle it will be attached to yet but I just grabbed a mosin from the safe and laid it on top of the bipod and it seems like I can't shoulder the rifle without aiming down while laying prone. I get my rifle Thursday and if it doesn't seem like a good fit I don't think I will be able to get the bipod returned and the 9-13 shipped in time for the match.. So uh, anyone have an extra 9-13" bipod I might be able to use if needed?

Both.
Your mosin has more drop at the heel than a typical precision rifle does.

I am planning on coming as well. Not sure who I have to email or talk to but I worked the grandparents into taking the kids that Sunday. Looking forward to my first little match. I am sure I don't have all the gear one should have for these comps but this is good way to start. Also your correct I was talking about signing up for a caprc membership this year. I live in Simi Valley so wegc looks like one heck of a drive. Looking forward to shooting.

Just letting everyone know, shooters will be grouped into two squads and will be assigned a shooter number at sign in.
Newbie shooters, remember, the most important thing is safety:
1.Don't point your muzzle at anybody
2.Don't put your finger on the trigger unless you are shooting a target in a stage.
3.Leave your rifle unloaded with mag out and bolt back at all times, unless you are shooting a stage.
Shooters will receive a C.O.F. when they sign in.
Good luck and Have fun!!!

Shawschar, theres always plenty of helpful shooters around who are willing to give you their 2cents about some topic, or explain and possibly show you something that you are inquiring about.

Just bring what you need to shoot ur rifle comfortably. I would also recommend waiting to make final decisions about gear upgrades untill you have observed and paeticipated a couple of times, that way you will know what u want and why.

Thanks for the advise, looking forward to see/meeting everyone tomorrow. I am about 75% in, I have a 4 month old that is hopefully getting over being sick. The grandparents can't afford to get sick so they are saying if he is not better by tonight then they can't come over to watch him and my daughter. So I am planning on being there. I have a mat and some bags, and borrowed a bag so I think I am good to go. Like you said shoot and see what works for me. Thanks again.
