New precision shooter from Arizona

Post by AZhighpower »

Hello,

I've recently moved back to my hometown of southern CA, and I'm curious about what kind of precision rifle matches are taking place at the Angeles Crest Range. I've been in AZ for ten years, so someone please give me an update!

A few questions:

1. Are there midrange (500-600 yard) prone highpower matches taking place at Angeles Crest?

2. Does Angeles Crest now have target pits like a high power range? If so, at what distance(s)?

3. Is there a calendar of events that someone can link me to so that I can see when, and what kind (i.e.; NRA midrange prone, Across the Course, C&R, etc.) of match is taking place?

I'm looking primarily for 500-yard NRA High Power; prone 60-shot course of fire with an F-T/R rifle. I'm sure there are many F-class shooters here.

Thank you!

Your closest ranges for highpower is to check out Desert Marksmen http://www.desertmarksmen.org/ or BRRC http://www.brrc.org/
Thee is a Highpower club at Angeles Shooting range called http://www.angelesranges.com/matches/LARC.php but I belied they shoot a reduced course on a short range. If your willing to travel more, there are ranges out in San Bernadino and down by Camp Pendelton.

Thank you!

I've just checked out the links you included. I think the Burbank range seems doable. I live in Cerritos, so it's half the distance as the range in Palmdale.

Check out http://www.wegc.org/wordpress/ as well, probably the same distance as BRRC (whic is in Castaic, not Burbank FYI.)

West End Gun Club has been out of the Highpower game for a few years now, basically since I became a member to take advantage of it. This is a sort of master calendar with links to the various clubs: http://www.socalhighpower.com/ From Cerritos both BRRC and the Santa Margarita Gun Club should be about the same distance, Castaic and Camp Pendelton respectively. The Santa Margarita Gun Club shoots on base so you have to pre register online before the match so you can enter the base but it's fairly easy and the facilities are large and nice. Burbank Rifle And Revolver Club has a smaller range with 5 firing points and pits at 200, 300 and 600 yards so you don't have to drag your gear all over the range for XTC. Their firing points are also covered with a mesh so you have a usable amount of shade. Also of note locally is the Los Angeles Rifle And Revolver Club which shoots Smallbore most weekends, also a nice covered range. http://www.larrclub.org/

Thank you for all of your information, everyone. I'm not sure yet as to what degree I will pursue precision rifle and high power competition here in California. I moved back solely to pursue a graduate degree, so I'm likely to be quite busy with that. I did bring my competition rifle and reloading bench, both of which originated here in California. However, I still own my home in Chandler, where the bulk of my 2nd Amendment stuff resides.

I used to shoot recreationally at Angeles Crest, Burro Canyon and Fish Canyon (R.I.P.) regulalry in the late '90's and early 2000's. I would love, mostly out of curiosity, to try a high power match here in my home state. However, I can tell by the driving distances and other things that shooting competition in CA is nowhere near as convenient and accessable as it is in AZ. Out there, you can attend a match pretty much EVERY weekend without having to drive more than 30 minutes, and you don't have to register in advance. We routinely refer to the Phoenix valley area as "shooting paradise."

Regards~
